Scheduling Best Practices 2009: Developing Best Practices in Construction Schedule Development Modern scheduling tools are incredibly powerful and useful to the manager who wants to maximize the effectiveness of every dollar invested in a project. But the untrained cannot easily access this power. The objective of these informative training CDs is to provide listeners with the knowledge they need to unlock the power of CPM scheduling on their projects. We assembled a team of nine construction experts from four different companies to lend you their insight and experience in developing and managing schedules. Even experienced practitioners will learn things they might not have known.
CD Session 1: Why use a Schedule, How to Get Started, and When will the Benefits Begin? This session begins with the very basics of the scheduling practice -- introducing you to the current concepts most relevant to today’s practice of the art. If you’re deciding whether to propose on a prospective job . . . preparing a bid proposal or . . . have recently been awarded a mega project, planning is essential and developing a schedule is of key importance. Where do you begin? Listen as Chris Bryant and Kyle Logan help you pick out the software you need and develop the initial plan that will serve as the framework for the detailed schedule to follow. CD Session 2: Developing the detailed (“Level 3”) Schedules After creating a basic plan, you may be wondering how to develop it into something that can produce benefits on a massive scale. The answer is in the details. This session will cover best practices and recommendations for creating a schedule for the first three months of the project, and how to create a detailed schedule for the whole project by defining activities, developing logic ties and organizing the schedule using code fields and work breakdown structures. Kimon Yiasemides, Warner Construction Consulting , Click here for bio.
CD Session 3: Resource-Loaded Schedules, Productivity and Capturing Data This informative CD covers resource considerations in depth. You can create a schedule without having it resource loaded, but you would be missing out on some of the most useful aspects of computerized scheduling. Whether you are concerned about limited resources, leveling out your resources to minimize “peaks and valleys” or tracking productivity, this session is for you. Your instructors: Instructors: William Hornbake, WH Scheduling, and Lynn Wenger, Schedules Inc., Click here for bios. Moderated by: J. Kimon Yiasemides, Warner Construction Consulting, Click here for bio.
CD Session 4: Properly Updating and Maintaining the CPM Schedule Historical Data The development, submittal and approval of a detailed CPM Baseline Schedule is a major priority at the start of every project. The Baseline should represent the As-Bid Plan containing sufficient activity detail and relationships reflecting the required work flow for project completion. The Baseline should have the input and concurrence (sign-off) of the entire project team, creating a true starting point for progress measurement. Once the Baseline is finalized, the schedule update requirements begin.
Proper updating of the schedule is critical for both job progress and productivity, but also to support time extension, delay and disruption claims. Listen to experts George Bonnar and Mark Doran as they cue you in on best practices for updating and managing schedules. You'll learn tips to make you more productive as well as what to look for if reviewing updates prepared by others. Having testified before courts, arbitrators and boards of contract appeals, you learn first hand how to handle situations that can affect recovery for schedule-related changes, including delays, disruptions and acceleration.
