We are bombarded daily by the media trying to sell us products with promises to make us look younger, thinner, and more gorgeous. Sadly, many of these products are not safe or effective. Many commercial products contain harsh, synthetic, and potentially toxic ingredients. There are, however, easy and affordable natural alternatives available to every consumer.
We hope our FAQ statement answers your questions, points you in the right direction, and inspires you to make a few small changes in your own routine. We all want to invest our time and money wisely while also looking and feeling our very best. Doesn’t it make sense to do so in a way that doesn’t harm our environment or us?

• Rely on digital documents rather than paper trails
Q. What does all natural mean?
The term “natural” is an ambiguous term and is not regulated, unlike the term “organic,” which is regulated by federal organic food guidelines. The word “natural” can include products that contain naturally derived ingredients or contain a certain percentage of natural materials. The biggest issue is synthetic preservatives and unregulated chemicals. Natural preservatives do work, and GF is very conscious of what we DON”T put in our products. Read more on how to read labels and what ingredients could be harmful at the bottom of this page. We design our products because we have sensitive skin and we truly love to use them, so obviously we only place items on our shelves that meet our personal quality standards.
Q. Are your products all-natural?
Yes and no. As with any product, reading labels is important. Yes, because our products contain mostly plant derived materials. No, because we use colorants and fragrances that are considered in-organic material, and are not directly from the earth. Our goal is to use the highest quality skin nourishing ingredients, fragrances, and herbs that have been approved for use on skin. We never use harsh detergents, synthetic preservatives, phosphates or parabens.
Q. Natural vs. commercial
We all agree that natural ingredients are safer, gentler, healthier, and more enjoyable to use. Commercial soaps (Synthetic Detergent Bars) and home products typically contain a variety of synthetic ingredients (petroleum bases, chemical preservatives, and alcohols) that can cause irritation, sensitivity, and can be damaging to your skin, especially with long-term use. Essentially the soap is some form of lathering chemical, shaped to form a bar of lathering soap.
Q. Why handcrafted natural soap is better?
We use real oils and real ingredients. Read a soap label at the drugstore. Ingredients you can’t pronounce, mineral oils, harsh preservatives, and artificial colors. How can you get your skin clean with ingredients like that? Instead, GF uses natural plant-based ingredients that nourish and cleanse without drying or irritating, and still prove effective against germs and dirt, but gently!
Q. Does handcrafted natural soap make your skin dry?
No, in fact we use skin loving oils like shea, coconut, olive, and palm oils to produce a balanced cleansing bar that leaves your skin hydrated, clean and luxurious to the touch when you get out of the bath.
Q. Essential oils vs. fragrance vs. flavor oils
Essential oils are highly concentrated plant derivatives, and a little goes a long way. They are generally (steam or water) distilled from the leaves, stems, flowers, bark, or roots of plants. Entirely natural products use essential oils instead of fragrance oils. Because of this intensity, it’s important to follow all safety precautions when using essential oils.
Fragrance oils offer a wider selection of aromas, are more affordable, but contain artificial substances, and do not offer the therapeutic benefits of essential oils.
Flavor oils are specially formulated fragrance oils that are safe to use in lip balms and other lip products. Good Fortune uses natural flavor oils.
Q. Cruelty free?
Yes! Animal testing is unnecessary and unethical, not to mention weird. We prefer to test our products on our willing friends and family.
Q. How can I extend the shelf life of all natural products?
Always read and follow the instructions for use. Keep product away from direct sunlight and avoid extreme changes in temperature. Tightly close products between uses and avoid allowing water or other contaminants to enter the product. Apply products with clean hands.
Reading the label shouldn’t be THAT difficult.
The ingredients in Good Fortune products come from the world God gave us, not a test tube: 100% vegetable oils and essential oils, clays, honey, shea butter, and natural exfoliants such as oatmeal and lentils. The higher price of these ingredients is a small price to pay when it comes to the quality we provide. We carefully select botanicals and nutrients to nourish the skin without harsh ingredients. Our advice is to learn the main chemicals to avoid, and then check the product ingredient label. Here are a few we don’t like: Animal Tallow (not a chemical, but we prefer to use vegetable bases)
Petroleum-free products – you know, mineral oil, the overuse of fossil fuels? Not cool. Go check your drugstore lip balm, lip gloss, and baby oil—GF uses beeswax instead! Mineral oil prevents the skin from breathing, and it blocks the absorption of the good stuff from soaking in.
Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS): Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is considered to be an irritant to the skin, especially when used frequently, and is commonly used to provide lather in shampoos, soaps and bubble bath.
Fragrance oils and dyes: Fragrance oils and dyes are synthetic and can cause sensitivities in some individuals. Commercial products are often loaded cheap synthetic fragrances and colors. GF offers high quality fragrance oils in order to give our scent-obsessed customers that ‘apple’ scent you can only get from an fragrance oil. We use our FO’s sparingly and add the lowest percentage to recipes to help avoid any skin irritation.
Shea Butter is Truly Amazing!
What is it and where does it come from?
We buy our Shea Butter from an American company who gets it directly from a female enterprise in Ghana, Africa. It is the most pure, 100% unrefined Shea Butter, derived from the nut of the Karite tree (aka Tree of Life). We simply reheat and repackage the butter, which allows you to get the full benefits of the butter.
What does it smell like?
We don't add a drop of fragrance to this stuff, so it is the most hyper-allergenic stuff we make. It is unscented, but still a natural-earthy aroma at first. Once you apply it to the skin, the smells dissolves quickly.
How do I get it out of the jar and apply it?
We suggest you use the back of your thumbnail to scoop it out and then rub it together between your fingers to melt it.
Can I use it anywhere?
Once the heat from your body has melted the butter, then you can apply it any where (and we mean anywhere!) Try treating your dry hair and scalp, dry face and lips, cuticles and elbows, baby's bottom and skin, and finally your dry winter feet.
What are the therapeutic benefits of Shea Butter?
Some say that this butter, from the tree of life, is nourishing to all skin types because it is extremely high in Vitamins A, E, and fatty acid. It has been reported to help treat minor skin ailments such as stretch marks, wrinkles, adult and infant eczema, psoriasis, diaper rash, and minimizes scars.
What is this white ashy stuff on top?
It is best to keep all natural products in cool dry places, but sometimes it gets hot and melts and then cold again (kind of like chocolate). We see this all the time in the summer. Since we do NOT add any type of preservative to our Shea Butter, it will not last forever. If your Shea Butter goes bad, you'll be able to smell a bad (rancid) odor. Remember, an earthy nutty smell is normal, and like chocolate the shape and texture may change with temperature, but the therapeutic qualities will remain intact.
Does your soap have lye in it?
"I found your soap and would love to get some for myself and know they will make great Christmas presents for family and friends. Though I've been reading about all natural soap and am a little confused...does this soap contain lye? In some places I read that it is impossible to make soap without lye, and then others say lye free soap. Please help me understand this if you can. Thanks, Nicole
Natural is the best, and although lye is used to make soap, it is not in the final product. Briefly, when the fat and acid combine it creates a chemical reaction called saponification, which changes the make up of both ingredients. The result is neither an oil or an acid, it is soap. Our ingredients are veggie based, gluten free, super luxurious, and made for sensitive skin. I hope this helps clear up your concerns, and you’ll feel the difference for yourself!

Good Fortune Clay Shaving Soap

Bentonite clay is an oil-absorber that provides a thick, creamy, smooth feeling. Castor oil is a skin softener that attracts moisture to the skin and then holds it in (it also gives it the big fluffy bubbles). Mixed together, these ingredients give you a close shave that is perfect for sensitive skin!
2.What are the various properties of essential oils and ingredients?
• Peppermint energizes and restores the senses.
• Tea tree oil has powerful antiseptic and anti-fungal properties, and is also anti-viral and naturally antibiotic.
• Menthol crystals give a fresh, cool and tingling sensation.
Our Sweet Island Coconut is a favorite because it is sweet, cheery, and fresh. We use a natural coconut fragrance as well as lemon and lime essential oils. Lemon essential oil brings fresh energy and is considered an effective astringent. Lime essential is also said to have astringent and antiseptic qualities.
3. How long will it last? Depends on how much you shower! We are nice and share our soap, and it last our family at least a month of shaving and showering. The trick is to keep it dry between uses. Check out our suction cup soap savers to increase the life span of your soap.
4. Is it for men & women? Of course it is! Men can use the shave soap on their faces and women use it all over.
5. Can I use it all over? Yes, have fun, but remember those menthol crystals can be tingly, so use caution around the eyes and other sensitive areas.
