Our company was started by Robert Dickson in 1947. He worked out of his house in the beginning before finally moving to an old Massey Ferguson Dealership building. At that time the company made mostly flags. In 1981 the company split, one half was sold to a textile printer who was printing flags and needed sewers. The focus of the company shifted to mostly custom sewing jobs. We made everything from Girl Guide sashes to inflatable products. In 1987 Bob retired and sold the business to long time employee Brenda Broughton. The name of the company was "Kennedy's Specialty Sewing Limited" referencing the fact that we were more than just flags. Still, people have known us best by the name of "Kennedy's Flags". In 1992 we relocated to a new facility at 14 Thompson Crescent,( in 2010 we moved to 20 Shamrock Road Unit # 6. Since that time, we have made everything from air bag restraints for Chrysler cars to CSA approved safety harnesses and restraints to Sun Shelters...oh, and of course, flags! We take on all types of jobs, whether it is an order for one flag with a personal logo on it, or an order of hockey bags for an entire association. To communicate our company as more than just flags has prompted us to once again re-identify ourselves with 2 separate divisions under the "Kennedy House" corporate banner. The introduction of our new "Wind Images" label will help us promote all products that lend themselves to the wind...flags, banners, windsocks, pennants and more. We are excited about this new direction as we prepare to offer all kinds of fun things. Our industrial items such as bags, tents, covers, filters are promoted under the "Kennedy Specialty Sewing" name. We offer custom sewing to companies and industries throughout Canada and the United States.
We are a family owned business since 1987. In addition to being family owned, we have many mother/daughter teams who have worked side by side throughout the years (as well as a couple of mother/son teams). We have made many large Canadian flags that hang on buildings in the Ottawa area. We have also made several 50 x 100' Canada flags. In the past we have repaired many hot air balloons, made repairs to horse blankets, helped design a horse sling for a very sick horse, made tent repairs and replacement tops, as well as boat covers. One of our acheivements was the design of the new windsock for wind direction at airports. Working with government officials, pilots and textile manufacturers, Brenda Broughton, helped design a windsock with great life expectancy visible to pilots in many weather conditions. The five band design chosen is still manufactured in our plant in many sizes!
Our sewing team has a great reputation for quality, as was recognized when we were chosen by Alex Tilly to sew some of his world renowned hats. We have also sewn air bag restraints, where our great quality computerized sewing was a great asset. Items we make year round are the "Shademaster" sun shelter. They are a hight quality canopy that protects from 90% of the sun's harmful UV rays. Again, a quality product made in Erin at Kennedy Specialty Sewing Limited. Some other products made by Kennedy are semi-permanent vinyl doors for the cabs on lift-tow motors; metal free belts for companies that use metal detectors; vinyl trash bags for the TTC; CSA approved safety harnesses; mosquito nets for outdoor protection against bugs; and replacement awning and chair covers. High quality and great workmanship turn into great Canadian made products.
