Pachypodium Saundersii
Pachypodium Saundersii

This is a white flowering species native to Africa.
It is member of the same family as Adenium and Plumeria (frangipani), the Apocynaceae or Dogbane family. This species is hardy, fast growing, and will flower at a small size (12") and a young age (1 year). Its growth habit is a low branching caudiciform, flowering at the apex of this year's growth, usually in late summer or fall. The shiny white flowers occur in clusters, each flower lasting a couple of days, but the flowering time can be several weeks. The stems can get to over a foot across in only a few years if given good conditions. They are strong summer growers and will usually go dormant if left in temperatures below 50 degrees. They are not damaged until the temperatures dip into the 20's.

This species makes a great potted plant with natural 'bonsai' like growth. The long branches can be cut back to maintain a more compact form. When grown in full sun, summer watering should be ample, and rapid growth will take place in larger pots. Mature specimens can be under-potted, leaving part of the root above ground for effect and the great bonsai look.

The plant you will receive is growing in a 4" pot.

Can you cook with Cuban oregano?

Yes, you can. Once you have tried it, it will become a staple in your kitchen.

According to "The Herbalist in the Kitchen"...
yes, you can cook with it and folks use it in the Caribbean, India, Java, and Malaysia, and now here. It also makes a great patio plant with its unique fragrance.

Culinary Uses:

The fresh leaves are used to season pork, or fish and cabrito (young goat) in the islands. Chopped in chili pastes (something like Jerk Seasoning, but without the strong Onion and Ginger presence), Cuban black bean soup, Frijoles Negros, in salsa with various unripe fruit, or served as an accompaniment to rice. It is used in curries, to flavor beers and wines, or brewed as herbal tea to cure cough and congestion.
