On July 4, 1776, three of our founding fathers; Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson were given the task of creating a seal for the newly formed United States of America. This symbol of Sovereignty, was adopted in 1782 from the early design suggestions of these 3 great men. The Secretary of State is the official custodian of the Great Seal of The United States.
