When they are nesting, we find ourselves doing a whole lot more watching than working. Because they are so small, these owls have to work hard competing with other birds for natural cavities. They eat night-flying insects, and occasionally other roosting birds, which may explain why the robins and jays go nuts when they are around. With several jays in hot pursuit, we've seen the two in our backyard hit the entrance hole dead on in full flight . . . a very impressive display of flight accuracy and air breaking.
