Most soaps have a relatively high pH, which is good for cleaning but tends to strip natural oils and fats and to leave skin excessively dry. Creamy cosmetic cleansers may help soften and restore moisture to dry skin but they do a really poor job of lifting and rising away dirt. Detergent bars lather beautifully and don't leave residual film but their chemical components are harsh and drying to skin. Even "natural clear soaps" can be drying if their clarity comes from 10-30% added alcohol!
