Botanical Name: Michelia figo | Magnolia fuscata
Plant Family: Magnoliaceae - Magnolia Family
Plant Origin/Magnolia Nursery Cultivar: Western China
Banana Shrub was introduced in the United States in the late 1700's and is considered one of the South's best old-fashioned heirlooms shrubs. The genus Michelia was named in 1737 in honor of Pietro Antonio Micheli (1679-1737) the renowned Italian botanist and author. Please do not be alarmed at Banana Shrub's lack of leaves when receiving them during the winter months. It's natural for them, and many other Southern broadleaf evergreens, to drop their oldest leaves (the ones located farthest from their branch tips) at this time of the year.
