Botanical Name:Bambusa oldhamii [Sinocalamus oldhamii] Plant Family: Poaceae (Gramineae): Grass Family Plant Origin: China + Taiwan Giant Timber Bamboo shares an odd trait with other bamboos: occasionally, many bamboos of the same species in a large geographic area bloom at once. This is called gregarious blooming. Flowering intervals seem random: most bamboo rarely flower, and one species has a flowering interval of 130 years. Biologists still haven't figured out what the deal is with these flowering intervals. More information can be found at Complete Bamboo. a.k.a: Oldham's Bamboo, Tropical Giant Bamboo, Ryoku chiku (Japanese), Lü zhu (Chinese)
