Plagued since birth with a prescient ability, Deric Tillman, a country doctor's son, finally accepts this unique and burdensome ability as his lot in life. He adjusts and lives with it during the difficult years of the great depression of the thirties. World War II called on him, a mere navy Seabee yeoman, to serve anonymously and personally as an "advisor" to the distinguished Admiral Chester W. Nimitz.
