Fibroblasts were once considered to be static and with limited function with in extracellular matrix[ ECM] production. However that has been shown not to be the case. These cells are functionaly and morphologically dynamic with a clear trend towards hetergeneity in various tissues 1 Papillary fibroblasts of the superficial dermis are known to produce more decorin than versican. Decorin is noted for its role in ECM assembly by binding to type 1 collagen fibrils. Versican plays a matrix role in maintaining integrity via hyaluronan modulation. These proteoglycans are also expressed by the deeper reticular fibroblasts.  1Types 1 and 111 collagen are produced by both reticular and papillary fibroblasts in like quantity and ratio. 2 The two collagen types are expressed at a constant ratio in normal adult skin, but shows a marked decrease in cases of abnormal metabolism. Dermal fibroblasts play a crucial role in ECM deposition but also regeneration and repair.

The ECM is the complex within which a diverse array biological and biochemical functions are mediated by specific matrix molecule receptors and cell binding epitopes. The pericellular environment is the physiological niche for cells which not only protects them but further mediates celluar signalling. Metabolism and morphpgenesis are of cells is controlled via the ECM through the storage and release of signaling factors[ growth factors, cytokines]
