Kinetin (N6-furfuryladenine) the first identified cytokinin. It is derived from plants, has antioxidant properties and is a major signal peptide growth  factor. Kinetin delays the onset of aging characteristics in human fibroblasts and also inhibits keratinocyte growth.  It remains unclear in the literature, however it appears that it acts in signal transduction and stimulates defense pathways such as DNA repair. Kinetin also acts  either indirectly as an antioxidant preventing the formation of reactive oxygen species, or as a direct free radical scavenger .

In clinical tests, topical 0.1% Kinetin improved the appearance of aging skin in addressing the problem of wrinkling and poor texture  The 0.1% dose is well tolerated by the skin. Irritation issues were considered insignificant.

In a randomized double-blind 12-week trial [1], kinetin was compared to retinol-containing lotion. Both lotions made significant improvements. Kinetin produced better results in texture and clarity. Another randomized double-blind study comparing  topical kinetin plus niacinamide to niacinamide only and found significant reductions in spot, pore, wrinkle, and erythema index and evenness counts in the kinetin group. Significant increases in corneal hydration status were found in the same group.
