Zinc Oxide has enjoyed a long history of healing from the soothing salve in diaper rash ointments to modern day sunscreen, In recent times the focus on the dangers of UV exposure has grown exponentially not only due to the fear of skin carcinomas but also to the ever present fact that 80% of dermal aging is a result of photo damage.

Chemical sunscreens have been on the market and are constantly under going revision due to their loss of effect after 2 hours or less as well as their own photo catalytic tendencies when exposed to UV light. Rather than protecting the skin from UV damage they inadvertently harm the dermis through their own releasing of oxidants during  break down under UV stress.

The most commonly used physical UV filter is the inorganic micropigment, zinc oxide. ZnO  is capable of reflecting a broad spectrum of UV rays in the UVA and UVB regions. Major disadvantages of micro ZnO is  that it also reflects visible light, creating the so called ghost effect on skin. This is not an issue with the 300nm x 300nm x 20nm coated or uncoated particles. The unique shape and size of these nano engineered particles allow for the use of 25% in a formulation without the pasty white appearance that is common with the other ZnO grades. 

Zinc Oxide is fundamentally inert and has other less appreciated properties. It is an effective inactive active in the reduction of acne. It's antimicrobial properties are well established and is sometimes used as part of a natural preservation system as it impedes the growth of fungi, mildew and mold.

ZnO one of the most commonly used inorganic sunscreens, is regarded as photostable, nontoxic and non-allergenic.

Do NOT inhale ZnO when formulating. Wear a safety mask. 

The following is presented as a guide to the percentages of ZnO required to attain a specific SPF. Cross referenced against the popular brands that have been tested and sold with said SPF based on their percentage of ZnO in their formulations: The following table is conservative. A 20.6 % of ZnO in an expensive brand yields an SPF 30.
