This two-volume book, packed with local history and biographies, begins with chapters about the Indians, the French claim to the Ohio Valley, Washington's historic journey through Butler County, Christian Frederick Post's peace mission, the Moravian Missionary, Colonel Brodhead's expedition against the Senecas, as well as the settling of the wilderness and founding of the town of Butler and other localities. Includes loads of facts and figures regarding various wars and soldiers and extensive information on some notable characters of the early days. Mr. Sipe also included the history of the Harmony Society, John A. Roebling (the founder of Saxonburg), the case of the murder of the James Wigton family, to name a few. The last half of the book is devoted to lengthy biographical sketches, averaging one-half to a full page for each biography. Most include the earliest ancestor into the area, birth date and more genealogical data. Contains a seven-page biographical index and an extensive historical index.
