The letters transcribed in this book were penned by Milton E. McJunkin, a 24-year-old farmer who lived near the village of Bentleyville in west Pike Run Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. He joined the Union army on October 15, 1861. These letters provide a different view of the war than that of the average Army of the Potomac soldier--the 85th PA Volunteer Infantry served in both the Army of the Potomac and the Army of the James. This distinguished regiment fought from Williamsburg, PA, to Suffolk, VA, to Goldsboro, NC, to Charleston, SC, and Morris Island.
