PITTSBURGH & WEST VIRGINIA RAILWAY TIMETABLES. 2006 by Howard V. Worley, Jr. The Pittsburgh & West Virginia Railway began operations in January 1917, a court approved reorganization of the remaining assets of the ill-fated Wabash Pittsburgh Terminal Railway. With its companion West Side Belt Railroad line, the P&WV connected track from Pittsburgh on west to Pittsburgh Junction, Ohio and to the east at Connellsville, Pennsylvania. Mainstay of the P&WV's business was hauling freight between the Western Maryland at Connellsville and the Wheeling & Lake Erie line at Brewster, Ohio. Passenger train service was in operation for about fifteen years and was phased out in May 1932. The railroad survived the great depression, World War II and the post war years, finally becoming a leased line of the Norfolk & Western Railway in October 1964. Much can be learned from these timetables: train numbers; departure times and from where; times enroute to destinations; connection stations, their spellings and meanings, if they still exist; the number of passenger and freight trains operating each day; rules, regulations, and operating instructions; locomotion tonnage ratings; signal indications; track configurations. Some timetables even have handwritten comments and notations made by the men who used them in their daily work. While individual timetable formats varied, most contained detailed information, providing fascinating reading and a look back into the daily life of the railroad. A treasured artifact for the historian or rail fan, the P&WV railroad timetable is a much sought after collectible today. Author/historian Howard Worley has compiled this rare and complete collection of P&WV employee timetables, from the very first No.1 issued in 1917 to the final edition No.27 which was published in 1956; as well as included a few very scarce public timetables. He completes this work with the history and photographs of this important railroad. ISBN 0965862054, LOC 2006920157 508 pages, 5 x 8.5" soft cover
